China 的 Old Capital When you think of the Forbidden City, maybe you just picture that big square with four towering towers and the Red Wall all around it. It looks like a fortress built by magic. But actually, it's just a place where emperors sat, had tea, did grand speeches, and made decisions about how the country would move for decades. It is the largest collection of living buildings in the world, built mostly between 1406 and 1689.Most of the emperors didn't even know what the exact shape of a square was. They just called it the "Big Square". Inside, the floor is made of red tiles with blue lines, like paintings for children. The walls are brick and stone, very thick, acting as a giant shield against anyone trying to sneak in or hurt the emperor. Every corner has a name, and each one is named after a historical event or a famous story from the past. The building wasn't finished all at once. It started as just a simple palace for the first four emperors, built in 1406.Then, over a thousand years later, when the Ming Dynasty started building a new one called the Hutai Palace, they kept copying the shapes of the old ones, but with different numbers in the top corner. By the 1600s, the city was so huge that people could see the whole system from far away. The emperors even moved their little town once, but they never asked anyone for help. It was just their thing. They used to say if a building needed work, they just hired a few workers and showed them how to fix it. The interior is different from every other palace in the world. The main hall, or the Hall of Supreme Harmony, was built on a big circle, not a square. It has four huge doorways, one for every direction. Kings can walk through 360 degrees, but an ordinary person cannot step inside without permission. This is because the whole place is designed to show how powerful the emperor is. When he walks to the north, it feels like the sun is rising. When he goes to the east, it feels like spring is coming. There are also four massive towers, called the Purification Towers. They are 30 meters tall and look like giant swings. If the emperor makes a decision, he will sit on a swing inside and watch the whole palace spin around him, making everything look fast and exciting. The floors are covered in red tiles, which are strong and hard to break. But the palace is not just bricks and tiles. There are thousands of wooden beams hanging from the ceiling. If the rain falls hard, the beams can swing and snap, but the red tiles stay on the ground. If an earthquake happens, the whole building can shake a lot, but the wooden beams hold everything together better than the walls ever did. The walls are very thick too, about 4 meters high. They are not made of just one piece of wood, but many pieces put together with mortar. The roof is covered with five types of tiles, which is very expensive and hard to make. The emperors didn't want to build anything that could catch fire or rot easily. They wanted to last forever. Inside the palace, there are many rooms with very different sizes. Some are huge and have square floors, while others are small and round, shaped like a treasure chest. The emperor had a special place to sleep, called the Golden Palace, where the bed had no legs so he could stand on it. He also had a very big garden right in the center, called the South Garden. People say the garden is so big it can buy a small country. At first, the garden was just a small vegetable patch and a pond for fish. But over time, they built paths, pavilions, and even a mountain to make it look like a real landscape. Now, if you look closely, you can see a huge tree that looks like the Great Wall. There is also a lake in the middle that looks like a mirror. The emperor used to fish there, but now it is just a beautiful place for tourists to walk around. Serving the emperor was not just about giving tea. There was a huge kitchen made of over 40,000 head of pigs and a lot of different meats. They cooked for thousands of people every day, and they ate very little themselves. The food was not just soup; there were a lot of dishes, like dishes made from rabbit meat, dishes made from duck, and even dishes made from chicken. If the emperor liked a dish, he would order it immediately. If he didn't like it, other servants would just make it again. This is not a word you usually hear when talking about modern cooking. The kitchen was so big that there were so many workers, even some worked outside in the hot sun. People often complain about how crowded the palace is. You can walk around for hours and don't even stop to look at anything. But actually, the emperor lived in a small room, and the whole palace had over a million people working inside and outside. He could not even stand up without moving the whole building. But he never let anyone see his pain. When he fell ill, he had doctors come in quickly, but they still couldn't stop him from moving his legs. He always said he was fine, even though his doctors told him he might die soon. The palace was built to show how strong the empire was, not just to protect the emperor from falling. You can also visit the museum inside the palace to see everything that happened there. There are many old paintings, old clothes, and old tools. Some of the paintings show the emperor doing things that were very hard, like carrying heavy loads or fighting. The clothes are very different from today, and the tools are old-fashioned. You can see the emperor's favorite tea and even the bowls he used to drink it in. These items were used for a long time and still have their original color. They tell the story of how the people lived back then. Some people think the palace was only for the emperor, but it was also a school for the nobles. The nobles could go inside to see the emperor and learn about life in the old days. They could even play with the toys the emperor used. Sometimes they had to help the emperor fix things. It was a place where power was shared, even though the emperor was the one sitting on the throne. The palace was also used for other important reasons. Sometimes the emperor moved to a town called Beijing during a very bad winter, and brought the whole palace with him. That is why the palace has so many old stories about moving from place to place. You can still see the signs in the old documents, which say how the palace changed over time. It is a lived-in place, not just a museum. Every day, hundreds of thousands of people come to the palace to see it. They take photos, they climb the towers, they walk in the gardens, and they listen to the story of the emperor. The palace is not just a building; it is a movie, a story, and a memory of a very long past. It shows how the Chinese people have always liked to play with history and how they build strong things to protect themselves against the wind and rain.
